High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS)–Not So Sweet

Published by Linda under Food & Nutrition, Shopping

Once again HFCS has made it into the news…and it’s not good.

The scientific journal, Environmental Health released their findings this week on their study which found Mercury in nearly 50% of tested samples of commercial high fructose corn syrup (HFCS),

The Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) also detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popular brand name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled ingredient—including products by Quaker, Hershey’s, Kraft and Smucker’s.

Americans consume an average 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS with teenagers and other “high” users consuming 80 percent more (approx. 22 teaspons/day). HFCS is found in sweetened beverages, breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments.

Mercury is toxic no matter what form it comes in and given how much is consumed by this nation (especially children), the co-author of both studies, David Wallinga, M.D., is calling for immediate changes from the industry and the FDA to help stop this avoidable mercury contamination of our food supply.

Check to see if your brand made the mercury contaminated list:
